Katia rapidly strengthens to Category 2 status

Hurricane Katia currently has winds of 100 mph, gusts to 120, and is moving to the northwest. No changes on my current thinking – I believe it will approach the outer banks, possibly getting within 100 miles or less, but not make landfall there.

Here’s a satellite loop showing a rather healthy storm, with emergence of an eye in the last few hours:

A plot of the expected tropical storm winds over the next 4 days illustrates my concerns:

The storm should begin to turn more north and then northeast as it approaches OBX, but given this is about 5 days away, things can obviously change. More updates in the next few days…
